Environmental Management Systems (EMS)
All sites made steady progress on the development of an EMS that complies with ISO14001. The Pasminco target is to have the existing (non Savage) sites certified to ISO14001 by June 2002. Target dates for the US operations acquired from Savage Resources have not yet been established.

Budel and Cockle Creek had their EMS audited by independent accredited auditors and their systems were certified to the ISO14001 Standard.

Greenhouse Challenge
In May 1997,Pasminco signed a co-operative agreement with the Australian Government’s Greenhouse Challenge. The agreement commits the Group’s Australian operations to voluntarily reduce greenhouse gas emission rates by 3% per unit of production by the year 2000.

Pasminco has implemented a number of initiatives to achieve this target which are contained in the Pasminco Environment Report.

Environmental Auditing
A new cycle of internal auditing commenced in December 1998 with all sites scheduled for completion by June 2000. Sites are preparing action plans to address the issues identified in these audits.

External audits of Century and the assets acquired with the takeover of Savage Resources were also completed. The next cycle of external audits is scheduled to begin during the 2000/2001 financial year.

The Executive Safety Health and Environment Committee continued to review the status of the action plans addressing the issues from the last round of external audits. The review found that 61% of the issues identified in these audits had been addressed with actions in hand for the remainder.

Pasminco Environment Report (PER)
As a signatory to the Australian Minerals Industry Code of Practice for Environmental Management, Pasminco published its first PER in August 1999.

Shareholders, local communities, representatives from some of the major green groups and employees were consulted during the production of the report. It will be available to all employees, shareholders and the public. It also will be available on the Pasminco web site.

The PER details environmental performance across all sites, the development of management systems, major issues facing the company and action plans. The report also contains details of the environmental milestones during Pasminco’s first decade and information on lead, zinc and jarosite issues. Copies of the PER are available from Pasminco.

Lead in Air
Previous reports have contained graphs detailing ambient air at Port Pirie and Cockle Creek. It should be noted that the monitoring stations used to produce these graphs have now been decommissioned - Port Pirie monitoring done on State Government equipment while an earth mound is being constructed on the site of the Cockle Creek monitoring station. This year charts include five years data for monitoring stations located at the Port Pirie Police Station and at Fourth St Boolaroo (Cockle Creek). The Fourth St location is where the Condition of Consent of 1.0ug /m3 is to be achieved.

During the financial year, a downward trend was recorded at both of these sites and the Condition of Consent requirements were achieved at Fourth St.
