Environment
Respect and management of the environment is a key part of Pasminco vision and values. Efforts to act responsibly and carefully, and persistence with management systems that both audit and foster an attitude of environmental consideration continued during the year.
Environmental Management Systems (EMS)
During the year all sites have made steady progress on the development of an EMS that complies with ISO14001. The Pasminco target is to have sites certified to ISO14001 by June 2002. Target dates for the US operations will be established after the completion of a baseline review. Budel and Cockle Creek have maintained the certification of their EMS to the ISO14001 Standard
Environmental Auditing
The second cycle of internal auditing which commenced in December 1998. Australian sites are expected to be completed by December 2000. Sites are preparing action plans to address the issues identified in these audits. It is planned to commence the next cycle of external audits in the 2001/2002 year.
Pasminco Environment Report (PER)
As a signatory to the Australian Minerals Industry Code of Practice for Environmental Management, Pasminco has now produced the second publicly available environment report. The PER gives details of environmental performance, the development of management systems, major issues facing the Company and the action plans to address those issues.
The report also contains details of the environmental milestones over the past five years, information on lead, zinc wastes and by products and on emissions from Pasminco operating sites.
The report is available from Pasminco or www.pasminco.com.au
Greenhouse
Pasminco recognises there are uncertainties in the science of climate change, however there is sufficient reason to be concerned that increasing levels of anthropogenic greenhouse gases lead to interference with the world’s climate system.
The principal greenhouse emission for Pasminco is carbon dioxide (or CO2) related to energy, metallurgical process chemistry and reagents consumption. The major sources of carbon dioxide emissions for Pasminco mining and smelting operations are natural gas, electricity, coke, coal and diesel. Consequently, the primary opportunities for greenhouse gas emission reductions is through improved energy efficiency.
In May 1997, Pasminco became signatories to the Greenhouse Challenge, a joint voluntary initiative between the Australian Government and the Australian industrial sector to reduce greenhouse emissions. This cooperative agreement commits Pasminco Australian operations to voluntarily reduce greenhouse gas emission. Progress to date includes the development and implementation of management systems and completion of several capital projects which have reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
The Pasminco Greenhouse Challenge program recently underwent independent verification by the Australian Greenhouse Office (AGO).
As part of its greenhouse management strategy Pasminco is continuing to review Federal and State Government policies and evaluate the potential opportunities, risks and business impact. Findings are integrated into business planning and decision making. Pasminco continues to provide input into the policy debate through the Minerals Council of Australia,
Business Council of Australian. and the
Australian Industry Greenhouse Network.
Lead in Air
This year’s charts include five years data for monitoring stations located at the Port Pirie Police Station and at Fourth St Boolaroo (Cockle Creek). The Fourth St location is where the NSW Government Condition of Consent (COC) of 1.0µg /m3 is to be achieved. The results show that the Condition of Consent was not achieved with an annual average at the end of 1999 of 1.1µg/m3. By mid 2000 the annual mean was well below the COC. While the results at Port Pirie were elevated during the early months of the financial year they are now well below the NHMRC guideline of 1.5 µg/m3
