Implementation

The Implementation Phase will run simultaneously with the Sampling Phase with abatements works being conducted in accordance with the LAS implementation document.

Once the Implementation Phase has commenced, participants will be contacted by a member of the LAS Team to arrange a suitable time for a qualified contractor to attend the property to perform the required works pursuant to the strategy category (as outlined in the Sampling Phase) at no cost to the Participant.  Participants who wish to undertake additional works do so at their own cost.

What are the possible abatement actions?

The LAS team will write to the participants and advise of the level of works to be completed at the property.

Prior to any work commencing at the property, the participant must confirm in writing that they agree to the proposed works.

Will turf be laid on all areas that have top soil added?

Refer to the above table for the extent of works to be completed.

Who will be the contractor completing the works at my property?

The contractor assigned to participating properties will vary depending on the scope of works and expertise required.  The LAS Team will ensure that a suitably experienced and qualified contractor will complete the works at each participating property.

What if I do want to carry out abatement myself?

Participants can elect to withdraw from the LAS at any stage and elect to carry out their own abatement work at their own expense.  In this event, individuals can make arrangements with the LAS Team to deposit the contaminated material from their property at the PCCS site prior the closure of the containment cell.

If a participant elects to withdraw from the LAS they must notify the LAS team in writing.

How often should I water my grass?

Future Renovations and Working in Your Garden

The purpose of the abatement works is to reduce the risk of human exposure to contaminants in the soil via the installation of a barrier between the air born lead dust that may have settled in the soil and humans.

It is important to note that the abatement works have not removed any contamination in the ground below the barrier. Accordingly, the removal of grass or disruption to the surface in abatement work areas after the works have been completed may expose contaminated in the ground below the barrier. Accordingly, the removal of grass or disruption to the surface in abatement work areas after the works have been completed may expose contaminated soil.

In order to reduce the exposure to contaminated soil the following actions are suggested:

  • Wear gloves when working with soil.
  • Upon entering your home remove gloves and shoes at the doorway to avoid tracking soil indoors.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after working in the garden.
  • If you are disturbing the soil, shower immediately after you have finished and wash your clothing as soon as possible (after shaking any dirt off them outside).
  • If the soil is dry consider wearing dust mask to prevent accidental inhalation of dust
