Review Period Extended At Century Mine
Pasminco announced today that representatives of the local Waanyi Aboriginal community, the Queensland Government and Pasminco had agreed to extend the Gulf Communities Agreement (GCA) review period until May 2003.
As a result, members of the local community who had staged a peaceful protest at the Century mine canteen since last Sunday night, have now left the site.
Pasminco Chief Executive Officer Greig Gailey said, “We look forward to working with the Waanyi people, who are one of the native title groups party to the agreement, over the next six months to complete the review. Extending the review period to May 2003 will allow time for further consultation and input by Waanyi people."
"We recognise the rights of traditional land owners and are committed to working co-operatively with local communities to see the full benefits of the GCA delivered," he said.
The protest did not impact production at the mine.
The Century mine is a large open cut zinc mine located 250 km north north-west of Mt Isa in North West Queensland.
